"Abuse is common and widespread . . ."
I lived in Forrest City for almost 20 years, and my career is
still here at EACC. I hope those of you who know me will agree
I do my best to serve the community. I now ask something in return,
not for myself, but for friends of mine who are in dire need,
some of whom are, quite literally, in danger of losing their lives.
But first, close your eyes and imagine being chained, starved,
and physically and mentally abused for weeks. Then, imagine you
are forced to fight for your life against a member of your own
species who is larger and stronger than you. Terrified, you fight
as hard as you can, but your opponent is too big and fierce. You
are left torn, bleeding and in terrible pain. Instead of treating
your wounds, your owner beats you for being a “loser”.
This scenario is played out every day in Forrest City and St.
Francis County. Innocent animals suffer unimaginable pain and
suffering at the hands of heartless, greedy humans who are without
conscience.
Now, imagine you are tied or penned outside in the heat and cold.
Days pass with no food or water. Your owner walks by, and you
wag your tail to show you would love just a little attention,
a bite to eat, some clean water and maybe some shade from the
hot sun. But your owner just keeps going, as you grow so hungry
your stomach hurts, and so thirsty your tongue swells. You wonder
what you did wrong to deserve this punishment.
I could describe other scenarios just as horrific as these and
many more that are too gruesome to share here. Abuse is common
and widespread in our area, and it isn’t limited to dogs.
Many cats, horses and other animals are victims, too. Forrest
City Area Humane Society volunteers are doing their best to relieve
the suffering of neglected and abused animals. But, they can’t
do it without your help. The job is too big.
Please, please help. Here are some ways:
Report suspected neglect and/or abuse to 270-6900.
Donate money or needed supplies to the Forrest City Area Humane
Society. Visit www.fcahumane.org and click on donate or call 633-7036
and leave a message.
Adopt a shelter pet. You can view pictures of precious puppies
and loving adults at www.fcahumane.org. and/or call 494-9902 for
adoption information. I can’t imagine life without my best
friend and constant companion, Betty Sue, an adorable “shelter
terrier”.
Volunteer for shelter duties such as walking and socializing,
fostering, landscaping, cleaning, etc. Your time and energy are
desperately needed at the shelter. People of all ages are encouraged
to volunteer.
Spread the word. Teach your children to be kind to animals. Be
an advocate for God’s creatures who need you so desperately.
On behalf of the animals, thank you. If I had a tail, I would
wag it for you.
Respectfully,
Susan (Tooms) Wooten
