Helena Humane Society
Shuts Down
Local Dog Pound
January 10, 2008
After a severe thunderstorm containing drenching
rain and hail citizens of this community found many dogs in the
deplorable conditions of the local dog pound. Puppies being kept
in the same kennel with large dogs were being starved and mauled
by the older dogs. In spite of the presence of an electric meter
in front of the dilapidated building where these dogs were kept
there was no power inside. No heat in extreme cold, no fresh air
in extreme heat and no light except sunlight filtering through
a large hole in the roof and cracks in the walls. The city dog
pound is located at the land fill. Citizens reported that there
was no adoption process. Dogs not picked up by owners had no hope
of survival - they are destroyed after 10 days.
11 puppies were rescued by the Forrest City Area
Humane Society. Many adult dogs had to be left behind because
of limited space in the transport vehicles. The Helena Humane
Society members were arranging to have these animals immediately
moved to a temporary location until other arrangements can be
made.
